The Vieux-Laque Room was remodeled by Empress Maria Theresa following the sudden death in 1765 of her husband, Franz Stephan, who as monarch was known as Francis I. The room, with its black lacquer panels from Peking, was extravagantly expensive. Of note is the posthumous portrait of Franz Stephan commissioned specifically for this room. It was painted in Rome in 1769 by Italian artist Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787).
