One hundred forty feet wide by nearly 33 feet wide, Schönbrunn Palace's Great Gallery was the setting for court festivities such as balls, receptions and banquets. The ceiling fresco by Baroque-era Italian artist Gregorio Guglielmi (1714-1773) represents the prosperity of the monarchy under the rule of Maria Theresa (1717-1780), the only female monarch of the Austrian empire.
It was in this room in June 1961 that Soviet premier Nikita Kruschev and newly-elected U.S. president John F. Kennedy met in what was called the "Vienna Summit." Kennedy, together with many historians, believed that Kruschev got the better of Kennedy at the meeting.
