Vienna - paulgleiser

The Millions Room takes its name from the precious wall paneling made from an exotic type of rosewood. This room was originally intended for the Belvedere Palace but was transferred intact in 1766 on orders of Empress Maria Theresa. The inlaid miniatures show scenes from the life of Mogul rulers in India in the 16th and 17th centuries.
During World War II, the Millions Room paneling was dismantled and taken to be stored in salt mines in Altaussee.
In the 1980s, it was determined that the miniatures were extremely sensitive to light. As a result, they were removed and placed in protective storage. In their places are the high-quality facsimiles that you see here.
