Vienna - paulgleiser

The birthplace of Austria's longest-ruling emperor, Franz Josef, and bedroom of his parents Franz Karl and Sophie. On display here is the only surviving bed of state from the Viennese court. It was commissioned in 1723 for the imperial bedchamber of Maria Theresa's parents, Emperor Charles VI and Elizabeth Christine.
As a "bed of state" it was not used in daily life. It was a ceremonial bed, used as a birthing place of, and place of baptism for, heirs to the imperial throne.
In order to protect the rare textiles of the bed and walls, this room is exhibited behind glass.
Of note in the corner of the room is the white porcelain and gilded stove. It was tended by servants from a passage behind the wall, out of view of those in the room. It provided heat during the cold Austian winters.
