Vienna - paulgleiser

The Graben (German: trench) is one of the most important commercial streets in Vienna. The current street was, during Roman times, a trench that lay directly beneath the city wall.
In the late 12th century, using money they received for the ransom of King Richard I of England (Richard the Lionheart), the ruling Babenburg Dukes had the trench filled in and leveled.
Originally, the resulting street was a residential area. Today, it enjoys its status as one of the principal shopping districts of Vienna while yet retaining its name from Roman times.
