Vienna - paulgleiser

Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral) forms the spiritual heart of Vienna. A church dedicated to the martyr St. Stephen has stood on this site since 1147. The Gothic cathedral in its present form dates to 1359. Excavation to improve the church's heating system discovered graves dating to the 4th century, suggesting the the first church on the site was built on a Roman cemetery. The 450 ft. south tower dominates the Viennese skyline. The matching north tower was started but deemed infeasible and stopped at 65 feet.
The roof was almost entirely destroyed by Allied bombing on Friday, April 13, 1945 during the closing days of World War II. Restoration of the roof was completed in 1952.
