The square just outside the cloister of the abbey is a gathering place for tourists as well as locals. These two look as if they have matched wits at chess many times before.
Salzburg Cathedral in its present form was commissioned in 1628 and sits atop ruins of previous churches and cathedrals that date to 778 AD. Composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was christened here in 1756 and the baptismal font used for that sacrament is still in use today. Mozart later worked here as concertmeister and church organist.
Salzburg is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Salzburg. During World War II, a single Allied bomb fell through the dome and exploded at the crossing. The cathedral was repaired to its original appearance in 1959.
